Chunking and data compression in verbal short-term memory

چکیده
Short-term verbal memory is improved when words can be chunked into larger units. Miller (1956) suggested that the capacity of short-term determined by number chunks stored in memory, rather than items or amount information. But how does improvement due to chunking come about, and really chunks? One possibility a form data compression. It allows more information available capacity. An alternative operates primarily redintegration. Chunks exist only long-term enable corresponding reconstructed reliably from degraded trace. We review favoring each these views discuss implications treating as Contrary Miller, we suggest both but also underlying representational vocabulary system. Given limitations on representations sometimes allow exploited efficiently. (202 words).

What's magic about magic numbers? Chunking and data compression in short-term memory.
Short term memory is famously limited in capacity to Miller's (1956) magic number 7±2-or, in many more recent studies, about 4±1 "chunks" of information. But the definition of "chunk" in this context has never been clear, referring only to a set of items that are treated collectively as a single unit. We propose a new more quantitatively precise conception of chunk derived from the notion of Ko...

After elaborating the definition of working memory, the relationship between short-term memory and working memory, chunking in SLA and the relationship between short-term memory and chunking, this paper proves the importance of chunking through the experiment: the students’ capacity in fast reading, reading in depth, listening and cloze from experimental group was affected by vocabulary depth t...
متن کاملContext in verbal short-term memory.
We tested the hypothesis that stimulus-related contextual information that is incidental to task demands-an episodic code-is automatically, obligatorily encoded and stored as a part of short-term memory (STM) representations. Four experiments employed a running span task to investigate the effects of manipulating two types of contextual information: stimulus grouping and color. Three experiment...
